Starting Simutrans
Once installed you can just run the Simutrans executable; all command line parameters are optional. As a beginner, you might want to try the -freeplay option
For Windows users, the simplest way to start Simutrans is by using the SimuStarter utility - then you do not need to bother about editing the configuration files nor adding command line options. . You can also create a shortcut to simutrans.exe on your desktop; you can add command line options to the shortcut.
In Linux, you usually would start Simutrans from a terminal window, or by creating a shortcut as in Windows.
There are two ways to change the basic configuration of Simutrans:
- You change the configuration file
- You add command line options (to your shortcut or when starting Simutrans from a terminal window)
Command line options
The options given below may be combined; they are then simply separated by a space.
1.1.1. Freeplay
- simutrans -freeplay
- Start in sandbox mode
You have 'endless' money. This means that the game won't stop, if you have negative value for more than three month.
: Normally in Simutrans, when you use up your $300,000 starting money, you have three 'months' within which to have a positive balance again after maintenance costs. Since it's difficult to get started within $300k when you're playing for recreation, you can turn on 'freeplay' to be able to have as much debt as you want. To do so for a game started without the switch, just save, restart ST with the switch, and load the savegame again.
1.1.2. Screen resolution
- simutrans.exe -screensize widthxheight
- Set the screen resolution to the given values in pixels
F ex: simutrans -screensize 800x600
Warning:
Do not specify a resolution that is not supported by your monitor or graphics card. If you do, then irreparable damage to your monitor or graphics card may be inflicted; which will not be covered by any warranties. Do not choose a resolution lower than 640x480, since then the icon list will not be shown - making game play impossible.
1.1.3. Fullscreen mode
- simutrans -fullscreen
- Starts Simutrans in fullscreen mode
Simutrans will use the whole screen, without any window border. It can then be necessary to specify a common screen resolution such as 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768, 1152x864, 1280x1024 or 1600x1200 that the monitor and graphics card support. For TFT-monitors, it is usually most advantageous to use the true physical resolution of the monitor, to avoid lowering the quality through pixel interpolation or discarding pixels.
1.1.4. Framerate
- simutrans -fps n
- Refreshes the display n times per second.
Simutrans will respond much better on a slow computer (slow in relation to the screen resolution and the transport network´s size/complexity), if the fps (frames per second) rate is reduced. The standard value is 25; but usually the display is quite seamless even when lowering this value to 10. The lowest recommended value is 5. Note: This value may be set also by the parameter frames_per_second in simuconf.tab, which you also can change.
1.1.5. Asynchronic images; only for SDL
- simutrans -async
- May speed up the rendition of images on some systems.
1.1.6. Sound options
- simutrans -nomidi
- Turns off background music
- simutrans -nosound
- Turns off ambient sounds (vehicles, income, building sounds etc)
- simutrans -nomidi -nosound
- Turn off all sound
There is an as yet unresolved bug with SDL executables on Linux, that may cause Simutrans to hang with background music activated; -nomidi can be used as a workaround.
1.1.7. Simutrans as network server;
Only for Simutrans ver. 102.2.2 or higher- simutrans -server [port]
- Starts the Simutrans server using the specified port
It is optional to specify a port; if none is give the default port 13353 is used.
1.1.8. Alternative pak-set
- simutrans -objects <folder name>/
- Load the pakset in the specified folder (vehicles, buildings, factories, goods).
The folder must be directly inside the Simutrans-folder. The final slash is mandatory.
Examples

Or use the pakset start up files.
1.1.9. Loading Addons
From version 102.2 is it possible to store Addons in a separate folder.
- simutrans -addons
- Load all Addons at startup
- simutrans -noaddons
- Do not load any Addons at startup
1.1.10. Loading a savegame
- simutrans -load savegame.sve
- Directly start with playing this savegame.
Note: this parameter has to come as the last one.
1.1.11. Multi-User Support
Enable multiple users on the machine to play Simutrans, by separating the settings files etc to be stored in each users account. Note that this is the default. This is not the same as multiplayer!- simutrans.exe -singleuser
- Simulates the behavior of early Simutrans versions (to some extent): load/store all files in the program folder.
- simutrans.exe -multiuser
- (Default setting) Use user-specific directory to store savegames, screenshots and logfiles. Also take settings (like simuconf.tab ) from there, if available.
The user-specific directory is
- on Windows: C:\Documents and Settings\Username\My Documents\simutrans or similar (language-dependent)
- on Linux/BeOS/Mac OS X: $HOME/.simutrans (e.g. /home/username/.simutrans)
1.1.12. Log and debug mode
- simutrans -log 1
- Adds all log output to the file "simu.log".
This file can be useful when you have encountered a problem with Simutrans, and wants to report it in the forum.
- simutrans -debug 1
- Specifies the detail of log output by Simutrans.
The option -debug can take the parameters 1-4:
- -debug 1: Only errors are logged (default)
- -debug 2: Additionally show warnings
- -debug 3: All error messages
- -debug 4: yields a division by zero after fatal errors, allowing a backtrace
It is advisable to combine the -debug command line option with -log 1, since else the log messages will only be written to the terminal window (if you started Simutrans from such a window) or be lost.
